Caleb’s Corner

In preparation for the upcoming viewing of the new Daredevil season I aim to shead some light onto the other key players in this new story; namelyThe Punisher and Electra.

Quick overview

The Punisher

  • Frank Castle aka The Punisher is a stark anti-hero. In an world of nuanced and complex characters he’s refreshingly straight forward.
  • His back story is that his family was killed during an episode of mob/gang violence. The death count involved varies depending on which version you’re reading. Distraught and deeply emotionally/psychologically wounded, Frank falls back onto his experience as a soldier to keep himself stable. This experience also gives him the tools he uses to inflict punishment upon those that are beyond the reach of Law.
  • With a binary view of the world how does The Punisher be interesting? Usually it’s in the stories of the people around Frank. Their lives are usually shades of grey that temper or enhance Frank’s singular view of the world. Reasonably often the stark rigid viewpoint of The Punisher helps clarify where the participants in the story really stand.

Electra

  • Her mother was killed during a time of civil war in Greece. At the recommendation from her older brother, her father has Electra trained to be a superior martial artist. Years later her father becomes the Greek ambassator to the USA. While she is attending college in NY, she meets and begins to date Matt Murdock.
  • After being kidnapped with her father, Matt attempts a rescue which goes poorly. In their attempt to escape Electra’s father is killed. This steals the remaining hope and light she carried in her heart. She leaves to find spirtiual peace in Asia.
  • While wandering in China a member of The Chaste (the same organization to which Stick belongs) finds her and tries to train her and help her dispell her inner darkness. Unfortunately her shadows push Electra into the arms of The Hand, a clan of mystical ninja.
  • Years later her connection with The Hand puts her back in contact with Matt Murdock, now Daredevil.
  • Her trademark weapons are a pair of bladed Sai

New Releases

In Theaters:

  • Everybody Wants Some!! – Set in the world of 1980s college life, Everybody Wants Some follows a group of college baseball players as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. Get ready for the best weekend ever.
  • God’s Not Dead 2 – Welcome back to Hope Springs, home not only of Hadleigh University, but also Martin Luther King Jr. High School, where beloved teacher Grace Wesley (Melissa Joan Hart) helps students understand and enjoy history. Her love of teaching, her love for her students, and her love of life all come from the same place: her love of Christ. So when Brooke, a hurting student grieving the loss of her brother, reaches out to Grace, their coffee-shop conversation naturally leads to Grace sharing the hope she finds in Christ. When Brooke later asks an honest question about Jesus in the classroom, Grace’s reasoned response lands her in big trouble—almost before she even finishes giving her answer.
  • The Dark Horse – An inspiring true story based on the life of charismatic and brilliant chess champion, Genesis Potini. His emotionally-charged story is about finding the courage to lead, despite his own struggles – finding purpose and hope in passing on his gift to the children of his community.
  • Kill Your Friends – As the twentieth century breathes its very last, with Britpop at its zenith, twenty-seven-year-old A&R man Steven Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult) is slashing and burning his way through London’s music industry. Blithely crisscrossing the globe in search of the next megahit—fueled by greed and inhuman quantities of drugs and alcohol—Stelfox freely indulges in an unending orgy of self-gratification. But the industry is changing fast, the hits are drying up, and the only way he’s going to salvage his sagging career is by taking the idea of “cutthroat” to murderous new levels.

DVD/Blu-ray:

  • Concussion – Blu/DVD – It’s common to joke that the head-smashing of football makes the players “dumb”, but the reality is startling and disturbing. This film stays true to the facts about a neuropathologist that finds a link between the sport and brain trauma. The factfulness of it is also why many viewed the film as “dull”.
  • The Hateful Eight – Blu/DVD – A bounty hunter and his claim are headed for Red Rock. Two more bounty hunters show up unexpectedly. These four seek shelter from a snow storm on a mountain pass. The shelter already holds four of dubious intent. Will any of them make it to Red Rock?
  • Point Break – Blu/DVD – While it’s never been “great” the 1991 version of this film has a deep cult following. Thus Hollywood wants another shot. The new version really brought their stunt game, but the charisma of the cast was no match for the original.
  • Humans Season 1 – Blu/DVD – In the near future, android technology has reached a new apex, the Synth. A man buys one in hopes of helping his wife, who remains skeptical of the whole deal.

Comics:

DC

  • Aquaman #50 – Dead Water, sounds like a metal band, but if you’re near any amount of water pray that the King of the Seven Seas, Aquaman, finds you first!

Marvel

  • Captain America Sam Wilson #7 – This year is the 75th for the star spangled hero! This issue tells stories from the past and the present from an all star cast of writers and artists.
