Caleb’s Corner:

  • Jessica Jones Her show comes out this Friday on Netflix. What are the essential things you need to know?
    • The Basics but keep reading for the summary
  • Launched with the title Alias (not to be confused with the television show in 2001)
  • Her powers were bestowed upon her in an accident with a convoy carrying radioactive chemicals, while she gained super strength, limited invulnerability, and flight she lost her family to the same chemicals and a portion of her life as she was in a coma till the coming of Galactus, to earth, triggered her abilities and brought her back to consciousness.
  • She was placed in foster care and later adopted by the Jones family.
  • After seeing a battle between Spider-Man and The Sandman, Jessica felt drawn to the life of a hero, which also lead her to discover that she had super human abilities.
  • Her heroic career was relatively un-eventful. Her first identity was Jewel and she operated mostly in Hell’s Kitchen. As Jewel she first met Zebediah Killgrave, aka The Purple Man. The Purple Man used his mind control abilities to interweave his will with Jessica’s to the point that she was losing track of what was her idea and what came from the Purple Man. Her release from the Purple Man’s control came at the hands of the Avengers. You can get the fuller details in the comics or the Wikipedia page, but suffice to say, the abuse from the Purple Man, the fight with the Iron Man and The Vision, left Jessica in a mess, physically and mentally, Carol Danvers saved her from a much worse fate by stopping the Avengers and getting Jessica to help at a S.H.I.E.L.D facility where she also received psychic help from Jean Grey.
  • Once recovered, Jones was dismayed that none of the other heroes seemed to notice or care that she had been missing. This led her to take a darker more Batman-esque persona Knightress and take on street crime, which eventually brought her into contact with Luke Cage, and over time they developed a friendship.
  • Deciding to hang up the masked lifestyle Jones decided to open a private detective agency. Which is where the Netflix show, is starting. If you’ve seen the trailer, this is not an optimistic, heroic, and plucky Jessica, this is rather broken, jaded, and hardened Jessica. During this time she is trying to keep out of the capes and tights game, but the events around her keep drawing her back in. To further complicate matters The Purple Man escapes and is focused on getting Jessica back under his control. Which should give you all enough to jump into the show.
